What is Alcohol Abuse?

Alcohol, also known as booze, liquor, grog, piss or nip is a depressant drug that slows down the messages traveling from the brain to the body.  Alcohol abuse occurs when a person consumes alcohol regularly and in large amounts and can lead to alcoholism, which is a total addiction to the drug with an uncontrollable urge to consume more and more.

All drugs carry risks and there is no safe level for its use, therefore caution should be taken when using drugs of any type or description.  Each individual will react differently to alcohol  based on the weight and size, the amount consumed, the percentage of alcohol in the drink, and whether the person is used to drinking on a regular basis.

  • Confusion
  • Clumsiness
  • Loss of memory
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Passing out
  • Coma
  • Death

Treatment for Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Giving up alcohol after long term consumption can be difficult and challenging as the body has to be trained to function again without it.  The best course of action is to seek advice from a health care professional who is experienced in alcohol and drug abuse treatment. 

Entering a drug and alcohol abuse facility takes courage and requires full commitment to the treatment.  The support of family and friends is crucial to the successful treatment of a drug or alcohol problem.  Treatment in a specialized facility will include the use of medication and psychological treatment as well as group sessions.  The condition of the patient is constantly monitored and treatment prescribed according to progress or failure to respond.

The effects of drinking alcohol and taking drugs, including OTC or prescribed medicine, is unpredictable and dangerous and when certain drugs are combined the risks increase.
